famPLUS qualifies surrogate grandmothers and grandfathers

Flexible and reliable childcare options are particularly scarce in large cities. Daycare centers and kindergartens have fixed opening hours and holidays, and strikes disrupt the childcare arrangements for some working parents. Lucky are those few who can rely on grandparents in such situations. And the rest?

Borrowed grandmas and grandpas are a huge potential for our society," reveals Lukas Jaeger, project manager at famPLUS. The Munich-based company mediates qualified and reliable caregivers to parents nationwide to ensure a better balance between work and family life. The experts in care solutions have been observing an increasing demand for borrowed grandmas and grandpas for some time now.

Workshops for Future Foster Grandmas and Grandpas

To ensure that parents feel even more secure with this flexible alternative in the future, famPLUS project consultant Lukas Jaeger and famPLUS employee Helen Karcher, together with ElternService AWO, have designed a workshop series for future surrogate grandparents. During these weekend events, participants gain a comprehensive insight into the role of surrogate grandparents, and active seniors are offered an opportunity for exchange and further education through the workshops. The workshops cover legal topics, parenting questions, children's needs and development, as well as conflict management and finding a good way to interact with each other. "We talk to each other as equals, want to learn from each other, and collaboratively develop content – it's just fun," explains Helen Karcher, who led the workshops. At the end, participants receive a certificate for the training and can, for example, be placed by famPLUS.

Four such workshops have already been successfully conducted nationwide by the two family service companies: in Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, and Frankfurt. "They were good discussions. In the end, it's about reflecting on oneself, how one acts as a surrogate grandparent in a professional context, and how to successfully apply one's own parenting experiences in today's world," summarizes famPLUS project consultant Lukas Jaeger. Another workshop is scheduled in the coming weeks:

Stuttgart: 14-15 November 2015,  Sat 10-16:30 and Sun 9:30-13 at the  AWO Meeting and Service Center at Ostendplatz
